CUSTOM  TRUCK  BODIES SINCE 1979

Eddie Adkins Jr. began his career as a metal fabricator in 1965 for Baker Truck Equipment in Charlotte NC. His abilities to design and build quickly became evident and he worked as a department supervisor for 14 years. In September 1979 Eddie, with the support of his wife Judy, made the decision to leave Baker and start his own business. Armed with determination, one employee, and a new Ford pickup, thus began Adkins Truck Equipment.

The original shop location was a rented facility on Statesville Road. Some of the first truck bodies that Eddie designed and built were car haulers for Nascar teams, aerial bodies for Pike Electric, and crane bodies for Carolina CAT. Due to his success Eddie was able to purchase land and build his own manufacturing facility. In 1987 the business was moved to its current location on Reames Road. Eddie’s son Scott began to work for his father full-time after graduating high school in 1991. He worked his way through the shop and front offices, eventually running day-to-day operations for his father.

With continued growth in products and an increased customer base, there was a need for expansion and a second facility was built in 2015 on the same property. This allowed for manufacturing and paint in the original building, and installation, parts, service, and front offices in the new building. Around the same time Scott’s oldest son Timothy began to work for the company, and just as Eddie trained his son, Timothy is gaining knowledge and experience by spending time working in each department. He currently works as the parts and purchasing manager. Scott’s younger son Lane is currently completing his engineering degree at UNC. Lane works for the company between semesters and plans to join full-time after graduation.

Sadly, Eddie passed away on September 21, 2021. This was certainly an immense loss to all those who knew and loved him. But his legacy has continued on and is still the driving force behind Adkins Truck Equipment. Along with building a quality product, Eddie’s focus was always on people, employees and customers. That business model is what has made and continues to make Adkins Truck Equipment a success.
